I work with people 14 years and up. Usually when I work with teenagers I like to invite in the parent/s to chat with me, but only once I’ve really grown to know the person I’m working with.
My work with teenagers is generally guided by the patient him or herself, although there are times when I’ll say that I believe I know what’s best, and I will try to steer the person I’m working with in that direction, even though it may feel difficult. It is often the case in therapy that we resist what is healthy, because it feels scary.
When we are in our teens, such feelings of fear and anxiety are felt with great intensity, making therapy a hard task at times.
